Problem Solving with Computers
Introduction and Training Course

6 Jul-6 Sep 2013

The growing importance of software in math and science education and research, in order to better understanding of math concepts using existing mathematical software, seems very effective for high school students.

Goals are:

  • Introduction to Mathematical Software
  • Convert Mathematical Problems into Algorithms
  • Using software to solve the problems

Computer Science Summer School

Mathematics Workshops

Many workshops on introduction to mathematics have been run. These workshops aim to make high school students familiar with groupwork and basic concepts of mathematics such as combinatorics, geometry, number theory, statistics and probability, problem solving and also working with internet. One student from each of the second grade classes in Isfahan is chosen by their mathematics teachers to take part in the workshop, other students can refer to the IMH and apply for the workshop by having an interview. The programs are instructed by some professors, teachers and selected students. This workshop takes part in 9 weeks, four hours a week.

Research Kernels

After each workshop some of the students are selected for membership in the IMH and start their research and study in subjects such as combinatorics, Geometry, Number Theory, Statistics and Probability, Architecture, Dynamical Systems, etc. All groups present the process of their results in a final report. These reports are introduced, evaluated and awarded in the House Festivals. At their first month of entry in the IMH, students take part in a program consisting of “an introduction to logic”, “library usage” and “history of mathematics”. 32 papers and reports were given by the research kernels as posters or lectures in the first festival of the House (Sept 1999), 30 papers in the second (October 2000) and the third festival and 35 papers in the fourth festival (May 2003). Finally in the 5th festival which took place in May 2004, there were 80 papers from all over the country in the festival. In May 2006 on the Mathematics Day, at the conclusion of mathematics and art workshop and the sixth festival of Isfahan Mathematics House, the selected projects were introduced and appreciated.

The research kernels are now preparing their papers for the seventh festival, for 2007. There are some courses available for students in the subjects of windows operating system, internet, Maple, Minitab, introduction to fractals in architecture, introduction to dynamic systems, introduction to robots, arithmetic problem solving by computer, number theory and its applications, geometry, combinatorics, statistics and problem solving techniques. These students also use the computer facilities, IMH library, teachers’ research center library and the library of fundamental science research center (IMH). They can also get help from the consultants in IMH.

Problem solving Workshop

This is another program set by IMH from spring 2002, with the cooperation of university students to have argumentations on interesting problems for the members. Acquainting students with modern mathematical sciences Several programs have been run for IMH members till now on introduction to modern agendas in geometry, application of mathematics in architecture, dynamic systems, software generating, robots and fuzzy systems. Statistics, mathematics and students IMH has cooperated in the meeting of “statistics, mathematics and students” which was held by Isfahan University of Technology Students . This program was held in Isfahan University of Technology in 2002 and 2003.

Summer school of basic sciences

IMH has had several summer schools in Isfahan by the help of universities of Isfahan and Modern Iran Development Society in 2001, 2002 and 2003. In these summer schools which are one week long, concepts of basic sciences are introduced through classes, laboratories, workshops and lectures. The issues explored in these schools are, optics, electronics, gliders, robots, topology, coding, fourth dimension, fuzzy sets, animals anatomy, preparing acids, mathematics and art, application of statistics in industry and geology. Students have visited stone museum, information center and robotic centers through these programs and several professors from universities around the country have lectured in these summer schools.

Team Competitions of mathematics

IMH has started these competitions as an experimental program in 2002 by using the questions sent by the central committee of The International Mathematics Tournament of the Towns to encourage the scientific and group activities among students. The local scientific committee of the Tournament has taken place in Isfahan by the cooperation of some teachers, university professors, and old IMH members.

After achieving the agreement of the central committee these competitions are run under the title of IMH Team Competition every year after 2002. There have been 253 teams in 2002, 650 teams in 2003, 750 teams in 2004, and 800 teams in 2005, taking part in this competition. This competition, which is unique in Iran because of its situation, has made Isfahan the only city taking part in the International Mathematics Tournament of the Towns as a team. The winner teams are introduced to the central committee in Moscow by the criteria of the central committee and the awards of some selected teams are dedicated to them. Several teams have achieved the diploma of honor from the central committee in Moscow; and in 2006, two groups of students are invited to take part in the summer seminar in Moscow.

On 23 December 2004, the first round of the competition was run by the educational groups of each region and the winners competed in the final round on 17 March 2004. The awards of the last two periods of the competition were dedicated in the Isfahan mathematics house festival.

Workshops and student camps

Several Workshops and student camps have been weathered by IMH till now, one of them named mathematics and Telecommunication in which issues like coding, number theory and information theory were explored.

Robotic teams

IMH has constituted robotic teams of students with the help of Isfahan University of Technology to prepare the students for the province, national and international competitions. IMH has invited schools available for constituting these teams to cooperate in this program. The Espadana student robotic team which had contributed in the international robotic competitions in Portuguese by the support of IMH achieved the champion deputy.

Membership

Students, teachers and university faculties can become a member of mathematics house and use its library, ISP and other programs. Organization and honorary membership is also available for the institutions and people who help the IMH .
