Isfahan Mathematics House activities in the Field of Statistics

Celebration of World Statistics Day And National Statistics and Planning Day In I. R. Iran

A Report of the Statistics WEEK in IRAN

As recalled in Barbeau & Taylor (Challenging Mathematics in and Beyond the Classroom (The 16th ICMI Study), New York: Springer 2009, p.88) , the origin of Mathematics Houses in Iran results from the creation of a high commission headed by the President of Iran, for the observance of the 2000-World Mathematical Year, set up in 1997. This commission indeed took as a goal, the creation of Mathematics Houses. The first one opened in Isfahan in 1999 with the help of the municipality of Isfahan. A diversity of activities serving the general public, students of all levels and their families, teachers, university students, researchers, artists and even university professors are organized by the mathematics houses.
At first, statistical activities were the study of the applications of this science in other science on various issues of social and economic development for teachers and students. Since Statistics is the Science of doing other sciences, the application of statistics is the main goal of teaching and learning of Statistics. So, according to this fact and the main goal of the mathematics house, the aim of the statistics group of Isfahan Mathematics House (IMH) and so the activities of the group concentrated on the applications of statistics and statistical modeling.
These statistical activities in IMH can be classified as follows:

 In order to meet the goal of popularizing statistics, in our society at large, the Iranian Statistical society (IRSS), in corporation with the Iranian Association of Mathematics Teacher’s Society (IAMTS), have convinced the Ministry of Education to include one statistics course in the national school curriculum(called Statistics and Modeling). Also, by the efforts of these organizations, the national university entrance examinations (which are very popular among students and their families) now include questions in statistics.
 To realize the above goal and due to lack of statistical specialist in the school system, the courses were usually taught by teachers of mathematics. So, IMH has started preparing these teachers to teach statistics using proper teaching methods by some statistics professors e.g. Dr. Ahmad Parsian, Dr. Ali Rejali, Dr. Ali Zeinal Hamadani, some teachers and lecturers who are interested in statistics. There were workshops in this regard. So, IMH has developed lecture notes for mathematics teachers to help them understand the concepts of statistics and learn the methods of teaching it at high school level. These notes have been distributed among many mathematics teachers throughout the country. In these notes, real life examples relevant to the society were included and often selected from current newspapers and magazines. There were also several lectures on the importance of statistics in real life, throughout the country by members of the House.
Also, IMH developed a program in continuing education for mathematics teachers who want to teach statistics in schools or are already doing so. This program was at first developed for mathematics teachers of Isfahan in cooperation with Mathematics Teachers Society of Isfahan (MTSI) and implemented in the summer of 2004 at IMH as a workshop.
 After observing the effect of the first workshop, IMH in cooperation with IRSS and IAMTS ran this workshop for volunteer mathematics teachers in eight other provinces of Iran in the summer of 2005 and has announced its readiness to run anywhere else. These workshops also included in teaching statistical softwares, e.g. Minitab. (These activities were reported and have been published in the seventh chapter of the book of joint study of ICME / IASE, as a working model for other countries .)(Teaching Statistics in School Mathematics-Challenges for Teaching and Teacher Education: A Joint ICMI/IASE Study: The 18th ICMI Study, 2008 (New ICMI Study Series))
 IMH in cooperation with IRSS and MTSI started an annual statistical competition among high school students of Isfahan in 2006. This is a team competition, and the questions and projects required a good understanding of statistical concepts. Moreover, IMH with the help of the Iranian Statistical Research and Training Centre (ISRTC), has developed an electronic site in Farsi for popularization and education of statistics (www.mathhouse.org)
 Collaboration with the statistical research center of Isfahan University of Technology in order to make a connection between university faculties and industry for using the statistical methods in various industries and acquainting students with statistical methods in industry, were another activity of the house.
 Organizing some lectures and seminars for the students was another activity of the group. Some of these seminars are as follows(Lectures and workshops were leaded by experts in the field of statistics and probability) :

  •  “Network Distribution” by Dr. Gholam Hosein Hamadani, of Wisconsin University, USA, December 2002.
  •  “Geometric properties”, by Professor B.K.Sinha, President of the Indian Institute of Statistics, March 2003.
  •  “Application of Statistics in Industry”, by Mr. Nazif, November 2004.
  •  “Workshop on introducing appropriate statistical sites”, by Mr. Ashofte, of Central Bank of Iran, November 2004.

 Cooperation in the sixth statistics competition and the fifth statistical seminar for students, which took place in Sheikh-Bahaii University in 2005.
 Running the celebrations for statistics day with the cooperation of Isfahan’s universities and Iranian Statistical Society has been one of the most important student activities of IMH in the past years. In these celebrations, in addition to the lectures delivered by invited university faculties, some institutes such as statistical center of Iran, management and planning organization, Iranian Central Bank and industries in the province had exhibitions on their statistical activities and students got familiar with the applications of statistics in some fields.
 IMH and Isfahan University of Technology (IUT), as well as almost all other Iranian universities, celebrate the annual National Statistics Day “Statistics and Program Planning Day” by organizing talks, exhibitions and presentations of statistical projects which have been completed. At IMH, each year we had presentations from students, teachers and university professors included Dr. Alamatsaz, Dr. Behboodian, Dr. Faghihi, Dr. Meshkani, Dr. Monajemi, Dr. Navabpour, Dr. Parsian, Dr. Pezeshk, Dr. Rejali, Dr. Zali, Mr. Nazif and a number of Statistical Experts from different Organizations and universities.
