These workshops were held with the help of some experts of elementary education and Isfahan Mathematics Teachers’ Society, to introduce the aims and concepts of mathematical education in primary schools to the teachers.
Four Courses of these workshops have been held till now and 130 teachers and students of Tarbiat Moaalem College have taken part in them.
Similar workshops were held in other cities such as Kashan and Najafabad for 60 teachers in summer 2005.
This program will continue for all the teachers of primary schools and on other important issues.
A scientific report of these workshops was given in the 8th mathematical education conference.
These workshops were held in 2002 in collaboration with Iranian Statistical Society and Isfahan Mathematics Teachers’ Society, in which teachers were acquainted with statistical softwares and group study as well as discussion about the concepts of curriculum text books on statistics and modeling.
Because of success of these workshops and encouragement of Ministry of Science, Research & Technology and Ministry of Education, similar workshops were held in collaboration with Iranian Statistical Society and Teachers’ Society in summer 2005 in some provinces such as Isfahan, Chahar Mahal-o-Bakhtiari, Mazandaran, East Azarbayjan, Khorasan Razavi and Ghazvin.
To acquaint mathematics teachers in secondary and high schools in Isfahan with ICT, IMH has had some workshops on Windows, Word, Introduction to Internet and also Maple and Minitab with the help of Isfahan Mathematics Teachers’ Society.
Around 700 teachers have been acquainted with these programs till now.
IMH supports teachers’ research groups for dealing with challenges in mathematical training and encouragement of group researches; for this reason, IMH has done researches in the subjects below:
- – Geometry
- – Examination
- – University Entrance Exams
- – Challenges of Teaching Discrete Mathematics
- – The Effect of the Attitudes of School Principles on Mathematics Education
- – Reasons and Concepts of Teaching Mathematics in Primary Schools
- – Using Information Technology in Education and Research
The advantages of these researches have been explored in different seminars and conferences.
Some groups have joint research activities in the subjects bellow:
- – Standards of Teaching Mathematics in Primary Schools
- – Using CABRI in Teaching Geometry.
- – Interaction of Mathematical Education and School Principals
- – Investigation into Islamic Mathematics
- – Recognition of Handwritten Books on Islamic Mathematics and Astronomy in Isfahan.
IMH Members at ICME-12
Cooperation of IMH and ICMI goes back to 1988 when Ali Rejali, one of the founders of IMH participated at ICME-16 as a guest. After that, Iran mathematics houses were introduced in 16th ICMI study, Ali Rejali became the Iran representative at ICMI and Emran Behrooz, member of IMH, in 17th ICMI study.
In 2012, three members of IMH (Ali Rejali, Narges Assarzadegan and Leily Hatamzadeh) participated at ICME-12.
Ali Rejali, Iran representative at ICMI, Vice President of the WFNMC was the Co-Chair of TSG 34 either. And Zahra Gooya, faculty member of Mathematics Department of Shahid Beheshti University, became the member of Executive Committee of ICMI by his recommendation. Also, Yahya Tabesh, who named for the 2012 Erdos Award by Ali Rejali’s recommendation, received his award from Bill Barton, Maria De Losado and Ali Rejali at ICME-12.
Mathematics teacher and researcher, the member of IMH, Narges Assarzadegan was also the member of Organising Team of DG 6 ( Uses of History of Mathematics in School (pupils aged 6 – 13)) at ICME-12. She was invited to this group because of her articles and works on tiling and geometry and recreational mathematics in middle and secondary schools and has delivered workshops on these topics for both students and teachers.
Mrs. Narges Assarzadegan is a mathematics teacher and researcher on mathematics history. She also works on tiling and geometry and recreational mathematics in middle and secondary schools and has delivered workshops on these topics for both students and teachers.
Mrs. Assarzadegan is one of the members of Organising Team of Discussion Group on Uses of History of Mathematics in School of ICME-12.
The International Study Group on the Relations Between the History and Pedagogy of Mathematics (HPM Group) has been active since 1976. In addition to numerous publications and participation in several conferences (e.g., European Summer University; CERME), the HPM Group hosts an ICME satellite meeting every four years. Although a number of papers resulting from these conferences concerns the inclusion of history in primary and secondary school (pupils aged 6 – 16), the result is still that there are not many resources available for teachers who teach mathematics to students aged 6 – 13. An analysis of 130 papers from the HPM satellite conferences in 2000 and 2008, published in HPM Newsletter No. 77, shows that there are far more papers for pupils aged 14 – 19 than for 6 – 13.
