Mathematics Education Project For Blinds; 2016-2017

Empowering Visually Impaired People by Enhancing Their Mathematics
The cooperation of Isfahan Mathematics House, Community of the Light wave(Moje Noor) and
Heeva Foundation
Isfahan Mathematics House and Community of the Light wave(Moje Noor) Attending in IBRIDGE seminar
(8-11 December 2016), Barcelona-Spain

Mathemaics is the basis of many science and blinds have to know mathematics in order to work in most jobs. Blind students and pupils are faced with a shortage of math teacher and they have no optimized books and their educational materials are not enough.

To empower this students to learn math, should:

  • Optimize this book for them.
  • Provide booklet for optimized books.
  • Provide appropriate teaching aid tools for them.
  • Organize training base equipped with a Braille printer, optimized books, teaching aid tools and mathematics teacher.
  • Mathematics workshops Should be held  to enhance the level of student’s math.

From June 2016, Isfahan Mathematics House and Community of the Light wave (Moje Noor) In collaboration with the Heeva Foundation, Has started a project to teach math to blinds. This group decided to start working from first grade of elementary school In order to optimize the mathematical concepts for the blinds, and focused on First-grade book of elementary school, for this purpose weekly meetings were held In the presence of a representative of the Hiva company, a representative of teachers of the “Shahid Samani” school and two representatives of the Isfahan Mathematics House and reviewed First-grade book page by page.

To achieve the aims of meetings, activities include:

  • Design mathematics teaching aid tools
  • Design and writing teacher’s guide for first grade math book
  • Set up mathematics workshop

From Oct. 2016, we started teaching first grade students of Shahid Samani school, and a teacher of mathematics house went to school to help teachers with the approval of the school’s teacher and principal. After a month with the suggestion of Mrs. Hani this students come to Mathematics House voluntarily on Wednesdays from 15 to 17 in order to review the content of mathematics.

We hope other books, such as primary schools, high schools and university books also be optimized. We have decided to start this project in large cities and then expand in small cities. We hope this project also be ready for Persian-speaking countries and the Persian language blinds living in other countries. In the next step,we want to expand the project so that the blind can learn math by using an ordinary computer. Blinds become more independent by understanding and learning math; Can solve their problems; Because they know math; Can choose their favorite field and of course, they will produce more jobs. This project is presented at a conference in Spain and has been strongly welcomed by the audience.

The Blinds

Mathematics House think that blinds and other disabled persons are also creative and we have to use their creativity for showing their abilities, and give them their confidence on themselves. So far the blinds in Mathematics House have a special place. They are communicating with each other and other people through computer and other ICT facilities. They help each other by writing books and making CD’s to teach themselves how to use computer and how to learn mathematical concepts.

Mathemaics is the basis of many science and blinds have to know mathematics in order to work in most jobs. Blind students and pupils are faced with a shortage of math teacher and they have no optimized books and their educational materials are not enough.

At IMH, moreover, a group of researchers is developing specific activities for teaching mathematics and computer sciences to blind students
